Newwaves was started in 1989. Howard Blenkiron and Gary Eglesse started the club The Newwaves sticker was stuck across the rear window of both Howard’s and Gary’s bugs.

The Club, consisting of two cars started attending the Chelsea Cruise and the old Kiln Lane meet in Epsom an a Thursday Night. Kiln Lane was where Chris Dalton, Paul Nixon and Mark Cross also meet, after a few weeks they decided to join forces and the Newwaves membership had doubled.

1990. During 1990 the Club still kept growing and buy the end of 1990 the club boasted around 20 members. During this time Howard’s 67 was revamped (now white with polished 5 spokes)..

Early in 1991 the Club kept expanding, new members included Chris Webb with the old “Thump Thump” car “Billabug“, and Paula Riches 65 black Convertible (imported from the USA).

 Howard wins his first award, taking Runners Up at the Detling show. Chris Dalton becomes the first member to have his Bug featured in Volksworld Magazine. During the course of 1991 the meeting place was moved to the Hogsmill Pub, although meeting continued to be on the Thursday evening. Other members to join were Jason McCreery and Mark Winson both owning convertibles. Howard’s success continues with wins in class at Bug Jam and the GCC Winter Nationals. During the end of that year Spike Finch joined with his Karmann Ghia.

  In 1992 Newwaves began to display cars as a Club at various VW Shows. Nine cars were entered into the first Volksworld Show, held at the Rex Centre in Birmingham.

After constructing a large display, Newwaves became the first club to win Best Club at an indoor show, After the show Mark Winson had his Ghia featured in Volksworld Magazine and wins Best Ghia at bug jam.

Howard becomes the third member to have his featured in Volksworld Magazine. Newwaves continued to increase in size to around 35-40 members. Paul Nixon sold his Bug and bought a 63 bug (imported from the USA) and a rusty Karmann Ghia

By 1994 Paul Nixon’s Karmann Ghia was back from the body shop and ready for fitting up. Paul and Howard stripped the 63 bug down including engine, box and suspension and fitted it to the Ghia. The parts from the Ghia were then fitted to the bug and then sold on.

At the second Volksworld Show, now held at Sandown Race Course, Howard, Paul, Chris and Cathy Pike all displayed their cars. Cathy, owning a coral 64 bug went on to win Best Detail at the show

Paul and Cathy went on to have both their cars featured in Volksworld Magazine. A new member to join was James Winslow, with his 65 bug

At the 1995 Volksworld Show Paul and Cathy again showed their cars. Jason McCreery joined them. After the sale of his bug, he bought a old Cal Looker built by Rob Hendon. Jason repainted the car ruby red and fitted 5 Spoke Empi split rims and a hot 1776 engine

At the Beetle Bash Show, Paul Nixon won two awards, Best Ghia and Best Paint.

1996: Howard sells his bug and buys anther 67 bug. At the 96 Beetle Bash Show Jason wins “Sprit of the 70’s “ award for his 67 bug. Unfortunately at this time the Club began to loose members and then fell into decline.

1997: Jason McCreery had his bug featured in the 1997 Cal Look Edition of Volksworld Magazine. By late 1997 Newwaves re-emerged at the Hogsmill Pub still on a Thursday Night. This is mainly thanks to Andy and Carey an old member back in the early 1990’s. Attendance started to pick up again and new members joined these included Darren and Scott Carter.

Darren owning a Split-Screen Camper and Scott owns a 63 bug.

Another member Ben Subberfield, who joined around 94, returns to the club with his 69 Looker The bug now features hydraulic suspension.

Darren’s Camper debuted at the Dub Daze Show where it proceeded to win it’s class in the show and shine. It then went on to take Best of Show at the Ocean Surf Shop Show in Hove. More new members to join were Peter, Ollie and Russell Saunders, and Neil Vincent. Pete owns a Metalflake Gold MK 1 GP Buggy. Neil owns a mint green and white Split-Screen Van.

At the 1998 Volksworld Show, Newwaves displayed their cars as a Club once more. The display included Darren’s Camper, Scott’s bug, Ben’s bug, and Dan Naylor’s purple Cal Looker running Porsche alloys. Following the show Dan sold his bug and buys a left-hand drive 56 Oval from Sweden. More new members to join included Ben’s brother Dan with a 63 bug, and Mark McDonald with a 73 Karmann Ghia Convertible. Chris Dalton finished his 69 Bay Window Van, which he imported from Spain. It is now a work vehicle for his company “Volkswagen Emporium”

More new members to join were James Burns and Steve Inglis. James owns a 74 blue bug and a 54 Oval. Steve owns a 65 Cal Looker

1999: Howard finishes his 67 bug, featuring fuchs alloys

At the Volksworld Show Newwaves once again displayed as a Club. Cars included James 65 bug, Mark’s Ghia, Darren’s split Camper, Neil’s Split Camper, Ben’s bug Dan’s 54 Oval, Ross’s bug and Peter’s MK 1 GP Buggy. Inside the hall Newwaves also had four cars on display, including Howard’s 67 bug, Chris’s Bay, Cathy’s bug and Mark Winson’s 65 bug. At the end of the Show, Newwaves had won the Best Club for the Second time

2000: Ben sold his bug and bought an original Manx Buggy. Scott buys a Split Screen Pick-Up with 5 spokes

Dan finishes his 63 bug. Steve takes his 65 off the road for a rebuild. New members to join were Michael Wales with a Split Screen Pick-Up

Rajab Servwagi with a 73 bug and Stephane Wright after buying Ben’s old bug, now with a matching trailer and sound system. Scott finishes his Split. Newwaves returned to the Volksworld Show this time with a line up consisting of Mark’s 65 bug, Darren’s new 64 bug, Paul’s Karmann Ghia, Howard’s 67 bug, Dan’s S 63 bug, Dan’s Oval, Ross’s bug, Steph’s bug and trailer and Jim’s Split Bus. Inside the hall was Scott’s Pick-Up and Peter’s buggy. Newwaves retained the Best Club Award for the 3rd time

Bobby Branda from OZ joins the Club with his mint Bay Window Bus. During the summer Scott wins awards at the shows including VW Action, Big Bang and Brighton Breeze. Jamie leaves to drive a camper across OZ. Ross sells his bug to buy an early 59 bug. Howard and mark both have their cars featured for Volksworld Magazine. Chris McNamara joins the club with his blue Cal look bug.

Newwaves retains its best club award for the 4th time This was achieved with the help of a 100ft marquee and a 12 car strong line-up. Ben and Dan both have their cars featured for Volksworld Magazine. New members join the club including Neil and Mandy Melliard from Prosign

Ben wins Best buggy at VW Action and a Top 10 finish at Brighton breeze, Neil and Mandy also win a Top 10 finish. Tony buys a Chesil 356 speedste

Dan gets into the 12sec bracket in his Oval. More new members to join were Amy Alford, Nic Rogers, Steve Laws

2002: Kelton McDonald joins the club with his split screen 21 window samba

Ben has his buggy featured in the Jan issue of Volksworld magazine. Neil Vincent takes his bus off the road for restoration. Newwaves put on a low-key display this time at the Volksworld show, but no best club award this time, but there was success of Ben as he picks up a trophy for the best buggy. He followed his success winning Best Buggy and ‘Best of Show’ at Detling and at the Beach Buggin show in Portsmouth. Mark Winson has his old 65 Bug featured in Volksworld. At Bug Jam Ben again wins the best buggy award while Scott wins Best type 2. Two new members to join were Lee Atkins with a 65 bug and Andrew (FONZ) Clifton with a Karmann Ghia coupe

Dan has his bug featured in Volksworld.and then takes it off the road for a overhaul everybody buys new beetles
